The spy novelist apologizes for a brief letter. Since her husband
died in January she has "a lot of responsibilities".
Autograph Letter signed: "Helen MacInnes", 1 page, 4¼x6½. No
place, August 11 [1978]. On her personal letterhead as Helen MacInnes
Highet to "Dear Miss Davis", in full: "I just returned today
from a ten day period in hospital. And now I find a desk heaped with bills and
letters. Since my husband died in Jan. I have a lot of responsibilities. So
please excuse the brevity of my reply. I did find a photograph and I have
inscribed it. [Item not included.] What a marvelous man your father must
be! Sincerely". Helen MacInnes (1907-1985) began writing her
best-selling espionage novels just as World War II commenced (Above
Suspicion, 1939), and she continued through most of the Cold War. Her
last novel, Ride a Pale Horse, appeared in 1984. Above
Suspicion and 3 other MacInnes novels (Assignment in Brittany, The
Salzburg Connection and The Venetian Affair, were made into
films. The Scottish-born MacInnes and her husband Gilbert Highet, a classics
professor who worked in British intelligence during World War II, became
American citizens in 1951. Highet died in January 1978, permitting this letter
to be dated precisely. Light surface creases. Fine condition.
