HELEN MORGAN
8x10 image, shown with a cute terrier
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Harry/Yours/Helen Morgan". B/w, 8x10. Helen Morgan (1900-1941) was one of the first, and certainly one of the most accomplished torch singers in the history of popular music. Morgan began singing in small Chicago clubs, where her sad songs brought gangsters to the verge of tears. She graduated to revue, appearing in New York in George White's Scandals (1925), and Americana (1926) in which she was noticed by Florenz Ziegfeld, who signed her to play the role of Julie La Verne in the original production of Jerome Kern's Show Boat (1927). She later appeared on Broadway in Ziegfeld Follies (1931) and the 1932 revival of Show Boat, and was in the 1929 and 1936 screen versions of Show Boat. Morgan set the pattern for self-destructive chanteuses (Piaf, Holiday, Garland), dying of liver cirrhosis at age 41. Multiple wholes at corners. Corners worn and chipped. Toned. Lightly creased. Pin size notch at center top edge. Signature light and in poor contrast but legible. Ink date stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
