Signature: "Helen Taft Manning/7/22/80", 6x4. Helen Taft Manning (1891-1987), the second child and only daughter of US President and Chief Justice William Howard Taft, interrupted her studies at Bryn Mawr College to serve as White House hostess while her mother, First Lady Helen (Herron) Taft was incapacitated by a stroke. Helen, a strong and independent woman like her mother, campaigned for women's suffrage. She earned a PhD in history from Yale, and taught that subject while serving as Dean and then Chair of the History Department at Bryn Mawr until her retirement in 1957. She married Yale (later Swarthmore) history professor Frederick Johnson Manning in 1920. Vertical crease through center (lightly affecting signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
