DAY OF ISSUE. New Zealand native HELEN THAYER (b. 1938), became at age 50 the
first person to journey solo to the Magnetic North Pole. At age 63, while still recovering
from an auto accident which had put her ability to walk at all in question, she hiked 1,200
miles across the Gobi Desert in 126 degree heat. She also kayaked 1,200 miles of the
remote Amazon, and lived with wolves for a year. Honored by the National Geographic
Society and at the White House, she now gives motivational speeches and has published several
books recounting her epic adventures. In 1962 Helen married helicopter pilot BILL
THAYER, who has shared many of her adventures and enterprises, and co-authored Three
Among the Wolves. The "three were Helen and Bill Thayer, and Charlie, the part-wolf
Husky given Thayer by the Inuit in 1994 to help warn her of approaching polar bears on her
Arctic journey. Fine condition.
