HELEN THAYER and BILL THAYER
First Day Cover signed by the adventurous couple, with Helen adding the "signature" of their pet Husky, Charlie
First Day Cover signed: "Helen Thayer/Charlie", "Bill Thayer", 6½x3½. FDC of an Antarctic Treaty stamp, postmarked Washington, D.C., June 21, 1991, 50-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. New Zealand native HELEN THAYER (b. 1938), became at age 50 the first person to journey solo to the Magnetic North Pole. At age 63, while still recovering from an auto accident which had put her ability to walk at all in question, she hiked 1,200 miles across the Gobi Desert in 126 degree heat. She also kayaked 1,200 miles of the remote Amazon, and lived with wolves for a year. Honored by the National Geographic Society and at the White House, she now gives motivational speeches and has published several books recounting her epic adventures. In 1962 Helen married helicopter pilot BILL THAYER, who has shared many of her adventures and enterprises, and co-authored Three Among the Wolves. The "three were Helen and Bill Thayer, and Charlie, the part-wolf Husky given Thayer by the Inuit in 1994 to help warn her of approaching polar bears on her Arctic journey. Fine condition.
