Vintage black and white publicity photograph of Helen Traubel standing wearing a black dress.
Photograph signed: "Helen Traubel". B/w, 8x10. American soprano Helen Traubel (1899-1972) was considered one of the finest Wagnerian sopranos of her day, especially in the role of Brünnhilde. Traubel, who had made her debut with the St. Louis Symphony in 1923, was offered a position with New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1926, but she turned it down to continue her studies. She would later sing with the Met, and Traubel was also a popular recording and radio artist, and she appeared on Broadway, in films and on television. Her appearances on TV variety shows (on which she sang popular music as well as opera) led to her being fired from the Met by Rudolph Bing in 1953. Traubel published her autobiography, St. Louis Woman, in 1959. Fine condition.
