Black and white publicity photograph of Helena Rubinstein sitting at a table with a tea set in front of her.
Photograph signed: "Sincerely/Helena Rubinstein". B/w, 8x10. Polish-born Rubinstein studied medicine briefly in Switzerland before opening a small shop in Australia selling skin creams. She imported her first goods before beginning to manufacture them herself and then traveled to Europe to study under leading dermatologists. She opened her first beauty salon in London in 1908, following it with another in Paris four years later. In 1917, she began the wholesale distribution of her products, which would later include the first waterproof mascara (1939), the first deep cleanser (1950) and the first vitamin skin care (1954). In the years following WWII, she established manufacturing facilities. Rubinstein wrote several books on beauty and continued to direct her multimillion dollar business until her death in New York on April 1, 1965. Some light brushing to first name, otherwise fine condition.
