HELENE HANFF
The American author discusses the release of her book Apple of My Eye in letter to colleague, signs name in blue ink
Autograph letter signed: "Helene Hanff" in blue ink. 5½x3¼ postcard addressed to Constance Spencer Books of San Francisco, California; postmarked July 28, 1977 in New York City, New York. In full: "Bless you for the postcard. The mail continues to keep me broke! Andre is bringing "Apple of My Eye" out "in the fall" (October?- November?) (I don't know date yet.) Doubleday is bringing it out here next February. They will have held it for more than a year - Don't ask me why. Hope you like it. Thanks for asking about it. Yrs". Helene Hanff (1917-1997) earned a living as a TV screenwriter and freelance writer for magazines while trying unsuccessfully for many years to get her plays published. In 1949, she began a 20-year correspondence with a second-hand bookstore in London. Her letters to the bookstore, many of which were vivid descriptions of life in New York City, was published in 1970 as 84 Charing Cross Road, achieving great success. A BBC dramatization appeared in 1975, and the following year a theatre version began a long, successful run in London. A film version of the work, starring Anne Bancroft as Hanff and Anthony Hopkins as her London correspondent Frank Doel, appeared in 1986. Hanff's other writings include The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, Letter from New York, and an autobiography, Underfoot in Show Business and several children's books. She wrote multiple drafts of a work revealing a love affair with a famous American, but the book was never published nor the name of the lover revealed. Slightly toned. Corners rounded. Ink stamps throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
