HELENE HANFF
The 84 Charing Cross Road author discusses an upcoming book project with a California colleague, signs name in brown ink
Autograph letter signed: "Helene Hanff" in brown ink. 3¼x5½ postcard addressed to Ms. Constance Spencer of San Francisco, California; postmarked July 5, 1974 in New York City, New York. In full: "Bless you, would you believe that in the last three days, "Open House" is suddenly beginning to move? Somebody out there must have potent influence in Heaven. And bless you for your warm memoirs of this messy metropolis, I do so terribly want to write a book that will do such memoires justice. Cheers - & God bless!". Helene Hanff (1917-1997) earned a living as a TV screenwriter and freelance writer for magazines while trying unsuccessfully for many years to get her plays published. In 1949, she began a 20-year correspondence with a second-hand bookstore in London. Her letters to the bookstore, many of which were vivid descriptions of life in New York City, was published in 1970 as 84 Charing Cross Road, achieving great success. A BBC dramatization appeared in 1975, and the following year a theatre version began a long, successful run in London. A film version of the work, starring Anne Bancroft as Hanff and Anthony Hopkins as her London correspondent Frank Doel, appeared in 1986. Hanff's other writings include The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street, Letter from New York, and an autobiography, Underfoot in Show Business and several children's books. She wrote multiple drafts of a work revealing a love affair with a famous American, but the book was never published nor the name of the lover revealed. Slightly toned. Corners rounded. Ink stamps throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
