Photograph signed: "Bill Elliot", "The best -/ Forrest/ Tucker", and "Thanks/ Marie/ Windsor" in
various inks, b/w, 8x10. Still from the 1949 film Hellfire. BILL ELLIOTT (1903-1965,
born Gordon Nance in Pattonsburg, Missouri) had over 240 movie appearances between
1925 and 1957, both credited and uncredited. However, he's best known for playing two
archetypal cowboys: the real-life "Wild Bill" Hickok and fictional Red Ryder. Elliott, who
actually got his start in movies as an uncredited dancer, took the role of Hickok in the 1938
Columbia serial The Great Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok. He was such a good fit for the
role of Hickok, whom he played until 1942, that he was billed as Wild Bill Elliot for the
remainder of his career. Elliott moved to Republic in 1943 and took up the role of Red
Ryder, whom he played for another four years. By 1945, Elliott had apparently grown tired
of the squeaky clean cowboys that Hollywood was churning out at that time and started
producing his own, more realistic Westerns in the mold of William S. Hart, of whom Elliott
was a longtime fan. He switched to modern dress and hardboiled detective roles in the 1950s.
Although MARIE WINDSOR (1919-2000), born Emily Marie Bertelsen, said her favorite
films were Hellfire (1949), The Narrow Margin (1952) and The Killing (1956), the
actress and expert horsewoman is best known for her roles in "B" Westerns in the 1940s.
Her long list of feature films includes Song of the Thin Man (1947, her first featured role),
The Fighting Kentuckian (1949),The Eddie Cantor Story (1953), Abbott and Costello Meet
the Mummy (1955), Cahill U.S. Marshall (1973), and Freaky Friday (1976). Windsor also
appeared in a long list of TV series from 1952 (The Unexpected) to 1991 (Murder, She
Wrote), making repeat guest-starring visits to such shows as Hawaiian Eye, Perry Mason,
Adam-12, and Simon & Simon. Windsor, who served as a director of the Screen Actors
Guild for 25 years, died the day before her 81st birthday. FORREST TUCKER (1919-1986),
who made his film debut in The Westerner (1940), starred in a number of feature films
including My Sister Eileen (1942), The Yearling (1946), Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), The
Quiet Gun (1957), Auntie Mame (1958) and The Night They Raided Minsky's (1968).
Tucker is best known to TV viewers as crafty Sergeant O'Rourke on F Troop(1965-1966). He also starred in Dusty's Trail (1973) and Ghost Busters (1975), and appeared
in made-for-TV movies and several series, a few of which are Bonanza and Little House on the
Prairie. Corners rounded. Lightly toned. Slightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
