HENNY PORTEN
The famed German silent film actress pens her name on this 3½x5¼ printed sepia photo
Printed Photograph Signed in Ink: “Henny Porten”. Sepia, 3½x5½. Henny Porten
(1890-1960) was a German actress and film producer. Impressively, Porten acted in more
than 170 films from 1906 to 1955. She appeared in a great many films of the silent era,
and came to be considered Germany's first film star. One of her more notable roles came in
Georg Wilhelm Pabst's Gräfin Donelli, in which she played the character of Mathilde.
Unfortunately, the film is currently considered lost. A considerable number of the early films
in which she appeared were directed by her husband, Curt A. Stark, who became a casualty of
the First World War, dying in 1916 on the Eastern Front. She was married again, in 1921, to
Wilhelm von Kaufmann. Because she refused to divorce her second husband, who was
Jewish, Porten's career was stymied by Nazi authorities. Refused a visa, Porten continued
to make films (albeit very few) until her Berlin home was destroyed during an Allied
bombing raid. She retreated to Ratzeburg, eventually returning to Berlin after 12 years, in
1957. Light scuffing at margins. Toned. Corners and edges worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
