The noted translator asks publisher William Tinsley to send him some
novels for his convalescence.
Autograph Letter signed: "Henri van Laun", 1 page, 5¼x8.
Notting Hill [London], 1878 May 3. To "W. Tinsley, Esq.", in
full: "I have been ill in bed for a fortnight and may be in the same
position for another fortnight. I want therefore something to read. Will you,
kindly send me some of your novels, in order to help me keep awake. May the
blessings of an innocent author fall on your curly locks forever. Yours
truly". Henri van Laun (1820-1896) was a Dutch-born author, long
resident in England. The year of this letter, he published his History of
French Literature. The following year he published The French
Revolutionary Epoch. Van Laun was also a noted translator,
rendering the plays of Moliere and the histories of Hypolite Taine (a personal
friend) into English. William Tinsley (1831-1902) was an English
publisher specializing in the sale of novels. Heavily toned and soiled. Multiple
mailing folds. Corners worn and creased. Water damage at edges. Signature in
fine condition.
