HENRIETTA SZOLD
Henrietta Szold signs and addresses an envelope.
Autograph envelope signed on flap on verso:"From/Henrietta
Szold/Hotel Ansonia/73rd B. Bding./New York, N.Y", 5¼x3¾. Henrietta Szold
has addressed the envelope to: "Mr. M. Jastson Leoin/2104 Chelsea
Terrace/Baltimore/Md." Two cent stamp postmarked New York, New York
Station, 1937 February 3. In 1912, Baltimore-born Henrietta Szold
founded the Woman's Zionist Organization of America, Hadassah. She was its first
president from 1912-1926, becoming the first woman elected to the World Zionist
Organization in 1927. In 1920, Szold had moved to Palestine, where she
directed medical and rehabilitation work, especially for children.
Because of the rapid spread of anti-Semitism in Germany, the Jewish Agency
for Palestine had to create a separate agency to handle the emigration of Jews
from Germany. Soiled and stained.
