HENRIETTA SZOLD
Henrietta Szold sends an autograph letter of introduction.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Henrietta Szold", 1¼p, 5x7½. Hotel Eden, Jerusalem, Palestine, 1931 July 31. To Mr. P. Knahenshire, American Consul-General, Jerusalem. In full: "This introduces to you Mr. Arich Offseyer, concerning whom your office has some correspondence with Mr. Nashan D. Kaplen, of Lit-Ann, who is present in the United States. For reasons beyond his control, Mr. Offseyer could not report to the Consulate on March 19, 1931, the date of his examination, whether he is qualified to receive a visa for the United States. Your office granted him the privilege of presenting himself as soon as convenient. He is now here for this purpose, and is most desirous of putting before you all the details of his personal situation. May I bespeak for him your kind interest? Sincerely yours," Lightly creased. ¼-inch separation at mid-horizontal fold of integral leaf. Fine condition. With original envelope addressed by Szold to Knahenshire. Lightly creased and soiled. Separations at upper edge at flap. No postal markings, indicating that this note was hand-delivered. In 1912, Baltimore-born Henrietta Szold founded the Woman's Zionist Organization of America, Hadassah. She was its first president from 1912-1926, becoming the first woman elected to the World Zionist Organization in 1927. In 1920, Szold had moved to Palestine, where she directed medical and rehabilitation work, especially for children. Because of the rapid spread of anti-Semitism in Germany, the Jewish Agency for Palestine had to create a separate agency to handle the emigration of Jews from Germany. Two items.
