HENRIETTA SZOLD
Handwritten rejection letter, written to a man in Vienna on behalf of the Jewish Publication Society of America
Autograph Letter signed: "Henrietta Szold", 1 page, 6x. Philadelphia, 1901 December 3. On letterhead of the Jewish Publication Society of America to Herr H. York Steiner, Vienna. In full: "The Chairman of the Publications Committee instructs me to write to you that the Committee, much to its regret, finds, after careful considerations of the stories you submitted to its examination some time ago, that it would be inexpedient for our Society to publish them at present. Under separate cover the clippings and the books are being returned to you. I am sorry to say that in sending them from Reader to Reader, one pamphlet, the one entitled, 'Eine Heilige Nacth', went astray, although every precaution was taken against such an accident, and every effort has been made to trace it; As it was in print, I am in hopes that you will not have much trouble in replacing it. Yours very truly" [Signature] as Secretary to the Publications Committee". Henrietta Szold (1860-1945), the daughter of a prominent Baltimore rabbi, established a night school in that city to teach English to Russian Jewish immigrants. In 1893, she began to decades of service with the Jewish Publication Society, as shown here. In 1912 she became founding President of Hadassah. Moving to Mandate Palestine in 1933, she took charge of Youth Aliyah, an organization to care for youthful refugees from Nazi Germany. A kibbutz in Upper Galilee is named for Szold. Lightly toned and creased. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
