Comprises:
(1) Autograph Letter Signed: "Henrietta Szold", 1p, 4x7. S.S. Malaya, 1929 December 23. On stationery of "P.&O.S.N. Company's/S.S. 'Malaya'", Szold has handwritten the name of the ship: "Malaya", To Hannah. In full: "I was touched by your note to me, by its actual words and by the meaning, the striving, the aspiration that lay behind them. I understand, and in turn you will understand without my adding another syllable. Your red roses glorified my cabin all the way over. My love to you and your parents and Rebekah, I thank you all again for the warmth of the evening I spent with you." Fine condition. (2) Original envelope signed on flap on verso: "From/Henrietta Szold/P.O. Box 92/Jerusalem, Palestine", 5x4. Henrietta Szold addressed the envelope to: "Miss Hannah J. Hoffman/624 High Street/Newark/New Jersey/U.S.A." Stamp removed but postmarked Paquebot, Port-Said, 1929 December 25. In 1912, Baltimore-born Henrietta Szold founded the Woman's Zionist Organization of America, Hadassah. She was its first president from 1912-1926, becoming the first woman elected to the World Zionist Organization in 1927. In 1920, Szold had moved to Palestine, where she directed medical and rehabilitation work, especially for children. Because of the rapid spread of anti-Semitism in Germany, the Jewish Agency for Palestine had to create a separate agency to handle the emigration of Jews from Germany. Soiled and stained. Two items.
