Henrietta Szold sends an autograph letter of thanks for the note and
roses included is the original mailing envelope.
Comprises: (1) Autograph Letter Signed: "Henrietta
Szold", 1p, 4x7. S.S. Malaya, 1929 December 23. On
stationery of "P.&O.S.N. Company's/S.S. 'Malaya'", Szold has handwritten
the name of the ship: "Malaya", To Hannah. In full: "I was
touched by your note to me, by its actual words and by the meaning, the
striving, the aspiration that lay behind them. I understand, and in turn you
will understand without my adding another syllable. Your red roses glorified
my cabin all the way over. My love to you and your parents and Rebekah, I
thank you all again for the warmth of the evening I spent with you." Fine
condition. (2) Original envelope signed on flap on verso:
"From/Henrietta Szold/P.O. Box 92/Jerusalem, Palestine", 5x4.
Henrietta Szold addressed the envelope to: "Miss Hannah J.
Hoffman/624 High Street/Newark/New Jersey/U.S.A." Stamp removed but
postmarked Paquebot, Port-Said, 1929 December 25. In 1912,
Baltimore-born Henrietta Szold founded the Woman's Zionist Organization of
America, Hadassah. She was its first president from 1912-1926, becoming the
first woman elected to the World Zionist Organization in 1927. In 1920, Szold
had moved to Palestine, where she directed medical and rehabilitation work,
especially for children. Because of the rapid spread of anti-Semitism in
Germany, the Jewish Agency for Palestine had to create a separate agency to
handle the emigration of Jews from Germany. Soiled and stained. Two
