HENRY PEYTO-VERNEY (16th BARON WILLOUGHBY DE BROKE)
Writing from Stratford, he franks an envelope to a lady in Leicestershire.
Free Frank signed: "Willoughby de Broke", 4½x2¾ Addressed in his hand: "Stratford April eighteen/1830/Miss F. Fosbrook Ravenstone Hall/Leicestershire", Affixed to a 4½x6½ sheet with ink captions (unknown hand) and a short printed discussion of the lineage. Henry Peyto-Verney (1773-1852) succeeded his father as the 16th Baron Willoughby de Broke in 1820. He also held the title of 24th Baron of Latimer. The baron is said to have led a reclusive life on the family estate, Compton Verney, in Warwickshire. His wife Margaret commissioned the building of a remarkable marble church, Bodelwyddan, in North Wales, to commemorate the death of their only son. This barony dates from 1491, when it was created for a military commander of King Henry VII. A nephew succeeded to the title upon the 16th Baron's death. Surface creased. Soiled. Small holes on top margin of envelope. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
