Typed letter signed: "Henry A Barnes", 8½x11 affixed to
slightly larger sheet. January 18, 1967. In part: "Dear Miss Manning:
Many thanks, indeed, for your thoughtfulness in writing me about my book. I am
sorry that time has not permitted me to answer your kind letter heretofore...I am
glad that you enjoyed "The Man With The Red And Green Eyes" and that you
considered my presentation of the trials and tribulations borne by traffic
engineers pleasant reading". The book mentioned here, The Man With the
Red and Green Eyes, was Barnes' autobiography published in 1965.
Henry A. Barnes (1906-1968) a traffic engineer and commissioner who
served in several cities in the United States, including Flint, Michigan;
Denver, Colorado; Baltimore Maryland; and New York City, New York. He helped
pioneer several innovations in traffic control and safety, including the "Green
Wave", actuated traffic signals, and bus lanes. He is also well known not for
invention, but promotion of what became known as the "Barnes Dance", which is
a system used in larger cities to halt all traffic and allow pedestrians to
cross in any direction. Light surface creases. Slightly toned. Normal
mailing folds. Corners lightly worn and creased. Backing sheet torn on left
margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
