Postcard Photograph signed: "Henry/Ainley". B/w, 3½x5½, affixed to
4¼x7 album leaf. Postcard is captioned at lower margin. On verso of album
leaf, signature: "Yours Sincerely/Fred Stafford." English
Shakespearean actor Henry Hinchliffe Ainley (1879-1945), who made his
stage debut as a messenger in Macbeth, first found fame in 1902 for his
role as Paolo in Paolo and Francesca. His other roles included
Oliver Cromwell, Mark Antony, Malvolio, Leontes and Hamlet (the 1930 production
of the play was tapped for a Royal Command Performance). Ainley also
played James Fraser in The First Mrs. Fraser (1929), reprising the
role in the 1932 film version, and he made several recordings. Ainley was
the father of actors Richard and Anthony Ainley. We were unable to
positively identify Fred Stafford. Worthy of further research. Postcard is
lightly creased with minor surface scratches. Mounting leaf is lightly creased
and soiled. Irregular upper edge from removal from bound book. Overall, fine
condition.
