The controversial owner inscribed and signed this copy of his book about his famous horse.
Book inscribed and signed: "To/Gertrude Phillips/with all best wishes/from/Henry Alper/and Persian War", 227 pages, 5½x8¾ hard cover. The Persian War Story, by Sid Barnes and Henry Alper. London, W.C., Pelham Books, 1971. Signed on flyleaf. An inscription in the back of the book (unknown hand) says, "To My Darling Wife for a Merry Xmas 1972." English insurance assessor Henry Alper was the owner of Persian War, 3-time Hurdle Champion (1968-1970). Overcoming illness and injury, the horse won a string of events while setting a still-standing record for weight carried in competition. Alper, intensely ambitious for the first horse he had owned, was criticized for many of his decisions: he changed jockeys and stables often; and risked injury to Persian War by entering him in flat race and steeple chase competitions for which he was less well suited. Dust cover lightly worn at corners and edges. Lightly creased and toned. Book cover lightly worn at lower right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
