Printed image of the shore alongside Beston's waterfront home Chimney Farm. He passed away on this property in Nobleboro, Maine, in 1968. Sent to Mrs. Maybelle Huntington. Postmarked October 25, 1950. In Full: “Many, many thanks/for that wonderful catalog. I am quite/in process of being demoralized! All/the best.” Henry Beston (1888-1968) was a naturalist and author who first became a professional writer as a war correspondent during WWI. He volunteered as an ambulance driver with the French army in 1915, later sailing with the United States Navy. His first book, The Firelight Fairy Book (1919), was meant for children, but over time he shifted towards books that focused on man's connection to nature. His most famous book is The Outermost House (1928), which is largely based on his time spent living in a small living space (which he called the “Fo'castle”) just off the water for two years. The house and Chimney Farm, the land it sits on, have both been named National Literary Landmarks. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
