Signature: "Henry C Bowen", 4x2. Henry Chandler Bowen (1813-1896), a successful New York City dry goods merchant, also published an anti-slavery newspaper, The Independent, and was active in the formation of the Republican Party. His summer retreat in Woodstock, Connecticut, Roseland Cottage, was famous for its Independence Day celebrations attended by three Presidents (Grant, Hayes and Harrison), earning Bowen the moniker "Mr. Fourth of July." Roseland Cottage is now a National Historic site open to the public. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
