HENRY CABOT LODGE, JR.
U.N. Ambassador writes to the President of the American Geographical Society, regretfully declining an invitation to the organization's Annual Dinner
Typed Letter Signed: "H.C. Lodge, Jr." as Ambassador the United Nations, 1p, 8x10. New York City, New York. January 11, 1960. In full: "Dear Mr. Wood: Thank you very much for your letter of December 30, which I have just seen on my return from Africa. I greatly appreciate your inviting my wife and me to be with you at the Annual Dinner of the American Geographical Society on Thursday, January 28, and I wish we were in a position to accept. Unfortunately for us, the fact that we have an engagement of long standing that evening which involves the convenience of others, leaves us no alternative but to decline. With thanks for thinking of us, regrets, and best wishes, Sincerely yours". Henry Cabot Lodge (b. 1902), the grandson of Henry Cabot Lodge, was appointed by President Eisenhower as Chief of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in 1953. Having both the rank of Ambassador and a position on Ike's Cabinet, Lodge, a former Republican Senator from Massachusetts (1937-1944, 1947-1952), became influential in the formulation of U.S. foreign policy. His exposure during frequent televised UN debates led to his selection asRichard Nixon's running mate for Vice President in 1960, but the ticket lost to Democrats JFK and LBJ. Normal mailing folds. Staple holes on top left corner. Ink stamp on bottom left corner. Fine condition.
