HENRY CABOT LODGE, JR
Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. sends a letter of thank you for the opportunity to consult on a film.
Typed Letter Signed: "H.C. Lodge, Jr.", 2p, 7x9, separate sheets joined together. United States Senate, Washington, D.C.,1943 November 18. The Republican Senator from Massachusetts writes to Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, Beverly Hills. In part: "Upon returning to Washington I want to lose no time in thanking you once again for having so courteously invited me to consult with you and for having given me such an understanding and helpful welcome. I appreciate the frank and forthright manner in which you discussed the proposed picture with me and I am most sanguine that it will have that historical verisimilitude which will give it conviction and force...Indeed it would have been presumptuous of me to seek to tell you how the ultimate impression of my grandfather should be created. I sought merely to give you my idea of the essential truth of his career, realizing that you would know far better than I how to translate this into motion picture terms...My grandfather's reputation is very dear to me and your willingness to give him a sympathetic portrayal makes me most grateful...." In 1944, Darryl F. Zanuck released the motion picture Wilson starring Alexander Knox as President Woodrow Wilson (Academy Award nomination) and Sir Cedric Hardwicke as Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (H.C. Lodge, Jr.'s grandfather). The film was nominated for Best Picture. Two file holes at upper blank margin. Fine condition.
