HENRY CABOT LODGE
Lodge handwrote, dated and signed this letter in 1887. He received an unspecified work for revision, and he makes suggestions on how to improve it.
Autograph letter signed "H. C. Lodge" in blue ink. 1 page, 5x8. May 13, 1887. Addressed to "My dear Sir". Lodge writes in this letter than he is returning a revised copy of an unspecified work and makes suggestions on how it can be better. Lodge (1850-1924, born in Boston, Massachusetts) represented Massachusetts in the US House (1887-1893) and Senate (1893-1924). He was a vocal proponent of American involvement in World War I following the sinking of the Lusitania and, as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led the fight against US membership in the League of Nations. Lodge, a Republican, was not an isolationist like some League opponents. Instead, he argued that the US must be free to pursue its own interests without needing the consent of an international organization. (An additional motive was his ardent dislike of President Wilson) A scholar as well as a politician, Lodge was Harvard's first PhD in history. His grandson, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. (1902-1985), was a US Senator, Ambassador to the United Nations and to South Vietnam and the Republican Vice Presidential nominee in 1960. Two binder holes near left edge; top hole just touches handwriting. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Discolored on left and bottom edge and in upper right corner. Small piece torn out of bottom edge. Folded three times and unfolded. Discolored along middle fold. Otherwise in fine condition.
