HENRY CABOT LODGE SR.
Former Secretary of War and Senator thanks recipient for book on Naval Aeronautics
Typed letter signed: "H.C. Lodge" in black ink. July 20, 1917. Written on Senate Private Land Claims Committee heading. In full: "My dear Mr. Woodhouse: - Thank you very much for your note and for sending me the copy of you Textbook on Naval Aeronautics. I know that I shall read it with interest and that I shall find it most valuable and I shall of course be glad to let you know if I have any suggestions to offer, as you request. Very truly yours". Lodge (1850-1924, born in Boston, Massachusetts) represented Massachusetts in the US House (1887-1893) and Senate (1893-1924). He was a vocal proponent of American involvement in World War I following the sinking of the Lusitania and, as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led the fight against US membership in the League of Nations. Lodge, a Republican, was not an isolationist like some League opponents. Instead, he argued that the US must be free to pursue its own interests without needing the consent of an international organization. (An additional motive was his ardent dislike of President Wilson) A scholar as well as a politician, Lodge was Harvard's first PhD in history. His grandson, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. (1902-1985), was a US Senator, Ambassador to the United Nations and to South Vietnam and the Republican Vice Presidential nominee in 1960. Several mailing folds. Lightly creased and toned. Ink slightly smeared. Otherwise, fine condition.
