Signatures: "Henry C. Deming/Hartford/Conn", "John A. Gray", 5½x4¼. HENRY C. DEMING (1815-1872), a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Law School, was a state legislator and Mayor of Hartford (1854-1858, 1860-1862) before joining the Union Army as a colonel of volunteers. He served as Mayor of New Orleans under martial law (1862-1863). While mayor of New Orleans, Deming walking with Captain David Farragut, had dirty water dumped on his head by a woman of the city, triggering General Benjamin Butler's infamous "woman order" that women who showed disrespect for US troops would be arrested as common prostitutes. He was a 2-term US Representative from Connecticut (1863-1867). He was collector of internal revenue from 1869 until his death. He wrote a eulogy for Abraham Lincoln and a biography of his friend Ulysses S. Grant. JOHN A. GRAY was a New York printer and lithographer whose name appears on many publications of the mid-19th century. He did much printing for the US government. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Lightly toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
