Autograph Letter signed: "Henry Coppée/President", 1 page, 5x8¼, Lehigh University, South Bethlehem [Pennsylvania], 1869 May 4. To "Gentlemen", in full: "Please send me, as per last catalogue (10) Lucretitte, Histoire de France 6 vol $2, (43) Busk's History of Spain and Portugal .50. Yours truly". Henry Coppée (1821-1895), a graduate of the US Military Academy and veteran of the Mexican War, brevetted to captain for gallantry at the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco, taught English at West Point (1850-1855) before leaving the Army to devoted himself fully to an academic career. He taught literature at Penn (1850-1855) before becoming the first President of Lehigh University (1855-1866, and also pro tem 1893-1895). He lectured in history, political economy, logic and rhetoric, and Shakespeare, and wrote several books, including a biography of U. S. Grant. Multiple mailing folds. Corners worn. Mounting residue on front below signature (touching "President"). Unknown stain at lower center. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
