Signature: "H. Creighton Wallis/Maryland" in iron gall ink. 6¾x1¼. Henry Creighton Wallis (1838-1909) was educated in Maryland and at the uprising of the Civil War he enlisted in the Confederate Army and served for four years. Wallis then went to Louisiana to claim his mother's inheritance and after returning to Maryland he taught school for a number of years. Wallis returned to Louisiana and taught in Lafayette Parish and Vermilion Parish Public Schools. He married Effie Durke in 1892 and served as Superintendent of Education of the Lafayette Parish Public Schools from September 1900 to April 1901. He died at his Greenwood Plantation home. Lightly toned. Irregular cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
