the cinema's most enduring actors, HENRY FONDA (1905-1982) enjoyed
a highly successful career spanning close to a half century.
His first important Broadway part was in the first edition of New
Faces in 1934. That was followed by the title role in The Farmer Takes a
Wife, which he repeated in Hollywood the following year. Two years later,
Fonda was an established star appearing in such films as Jezebel,
Jesse James, Young Mr. Lincoln, Drums Along
the Mohawk and The Grapes of Wrath. Fonda enlisted and
served three years in the Navy during WWII-serving in Air Combat Intelligence in
the Central Pacific, he was awarded a Presidential Citation and the Bronze
Star. In March 1982, five months before he died at the age of 77, Henry
Fonda won his only Academy Award for his performance in On Golden Pond,
co-starring Katharine Hepburn and daughter Jane. In 1999, Fonda was named
the sixth Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film
Institute. JANE FONDA (b. 1937) made her film debut in Tall
Story in 1960, the year she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best
Supporting or Featured Actress (Dramatic) for There Was a Little
Girl. Her early film roles under the influence of French director Roger
Vadim (her husband from 1965-1973) cultivated a sex kitten image, as in
Barbarella (1968). Politically radicalized by the Vietnam War, Fonda
earned the lasting enmity of many by a visit to North Vietnam at the height of
the conflict. Her film career during the subsequent two decades was exceptional,
however. Fonda won Best Actress Academy Awards for Klute (1971)
and Coming Home (1978), and was nominated for Best Actress Oscars
for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), Julia (1977), The
China Syndrome (1979), On Golden Pond (1981; her only film appearance
with her father) and The Morning After (1986). She also marketed a
popular series of exercise videos. "Retiring" from acting in 1992, Fonda
made a comeback in Monster-in-Law in 2005, the year her
autobiography, My Life So Far, was released. In addition to Vadim has
been married to California legislator Tom Hayden and media mogul. Edges and
corners lightly creased. Henry Fonda's signature is light in contrast, but
legible. Fine condition.
