Heck Thomas signs a document.
Partly Printed Document Signed: "H.H. Thomas" in text, 1p, 8¼x3¼. Guthrie, Oklahoma Territory, 1893 April 24. Headed: "United States Court in the Territory of Oklahoma". In full: "I hereby certify That I have been employed and have acted Three day (sic) as a guard over Ed Newsome, a United States prisoner, in charge of H.H. Thomas, Deputy Marshal, from Fort Smith Ark to Guthrie Ok, being a distance of 497 miles." Also signed by guard: "Will McElhany" at Fort Smith. Thomas has filled in the blanks in this document and signed it. In the 1880s, as Deputy U.S. Marshal, Heck Thomas scoured Indian Territory for wanted men under the jurisdiction of "Hanging Judge" Isaac C. Parker. During the period between 1893 and 1896, Thomas was responsible for the arrest of more than 300 wanted men and became noted as one of the "Three Guardsmen"-- himself, Bill Tilghman and Chris Madsen. 2 file holes at left margin.
