HENRY HAZLITT
Hazlitt writes to fellow writers - the Holzers
Typed Letter Signed: "Harry", 1 page, 8½x11. Wilton, Connecticut,
1981 April 21. To Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mark Holzer, Mt. Kisco, N.Y. In
full: "Dear Erika and Hank: This is a letter to each of you. First,
Erika, let me thank you for your thoughtfulness in sending Frances and myself a
copy of your new novel DOUBLE CROSSING and to congratulate you on its
publication. The four endorsements you have got from well known authors on the
back of the jacket will insure your book good hearing and we hope it will have
the greatest success. I hope to get very soon to the pleasure of reading it. To
you, Hank, I am sending a copy of a column I have written for the SILVER AND
GOLD REPORT on the confiscation of gold in 1933. You will see that I have drawn
very heavily on your first rate account of the episode in the Brooklyn Law
Review. (Rather I have drawn on a condensation of that article in the WALL
STREET JOURNAL. If there is any way of getting hold of the article itself, I
would appreciate knowing about it). I lived through that episode, and even wrote
a few things about it, though at the time I was literary editor of THE NATION
and my dominant interests were then in another direction. Frances joins me in
sending you both our warmest affection and regards. Sincerely, [signature]
P.S. I have just been upset by noticing belatedly that in the printed version
of my piece SILVER & GOLD REPORT spelled your name incorrectly. It was
correct on my copy and when I first read the printed version I did not notice
the error - oh damn! I'll write them, but you can never really catch up on these
things!" HENRY HAZLITT (1894-1993) was a longtime columnist and
editorialist with such publications as "Newsweek" and "The New York Times."
He wrote nineteen books, beginning in 1916, and an estimated 10,000
columns. Hazlitt championed free market economics and personal freedom.
Economics in One Lesson, first published in 1946, was his most
influential book, but he himself considered The Foundations of Morality
(1964) to be his finest. ERIKA and HENRY HOLZER are lawyers, writers and
conservative activists. Her novel, An Eye for an Eye, became a motion
picture (1996). The Holzers also co-wrote Fake Warriors, a guide to
unmasking persons who lie about their military service records. One paragraph
emphasized with pen mark in margin. Lightly creased. Overall, fine
condition.
