HENRY JACKSON VAN DYKE
Handwritten sentiment on verso of someone's calling card
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Avalon, Oct. 27.1903./Faithfully yours/Henry van Dyke", 3½x2½. Written on verso of the calling card of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Barclay Parrine-Robinson. Henry Jackson van Dyke (1852-1933) was a Presbyterian minister and a professor of English at Princeton (1899-1923). He was an American lecturer at the University of Paris (1908-1909). He published sermons, hymns, poems, and many short stories, including several popular Christmas stories. He chaired the committee which produced the Presbyterian Book of Common Prayer (1905). A foe of US annexation of the Philippines, he predicted to his congregation in 1898 that such a course would lead to the US spending more on its military than on educating its children. President Wilson, a friend and Princeton classmate, appointed him Ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1913. Avalon was the name of Van Dyke's estate in Princeton. Lightly toned. Corners slightly worn. Faint pencil markings. Fine condition.
