HENRY JAMES MONTAGUE
His letter on Globe Theatre stationery, forwarding tickets
Autograph Letter signed: "H. J. Montague", 1 page, 4½x6½. No
place, 1873 December 2. To "Dear Mrs. Lewis", in full:
"Enclosed these for the box on Friday as promised. [Items not
included.] Did you think the piece a success last night? Believe me very
sincerely yours".English actor Henry James Montague
(1843-1878) won praise in London stage comedies, and co-founded the
Vaudeville Theatre there before Lester Wallach brought him to the US as the
lead actor in his company. He debuted as Captain Molineaux in The
Shaughraun (1874), and at once became a matinee idol, the American idea of a
suave and handsome Englishman. He was sued for breach of promise by actress Rose
Massey in 1875, but died before the suit could be resolved. Heavy foxing at face
and verso (lightly affecting signature). Mounting residue at verso. Ink note
(unknown hand) at verso (no show-through). Top edge irregularly cut. Minor notch
at bottom edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
