HENRY JARVIS RAYMOND
Very brief handwritten letter by the founder of the New York Times
Autograph Letter signed: "Henry J. Raymond", 1 page, 4¼x7 affixed to a card. No place, no date. To "My dear Sir", in full: "It gives me great pleasure to comply with your request. Very truly I am". Henry Jarvis Raymond (1820-1869), a journalist who had previously worked for Horace Greeley, founded the New York Times in 1851, believing New York needed a newspaper willing to espouse partisan causes without becoming angrily polemical. Raymond was also a politician, Speaker of the New York State Assembly in 1851 and again in 1862. He served one term as Lieutenant Governor (1855-1856). Originally an anti-slavery Whig, Raymond was active in formation of the Republican Party, and became national Party Chairman in 1865. Raymond and the Times gave unwavering support to President Lincoln during the Civil War. Elected to Congress in 1864, Raymond soon clashed with the "radical Republicans", favoring Lincoln's policy of conciliation with the defeated South. This stance caused his removal as Republican Party Chairman in 1866. Surface creases. Corners slightly worn. Lightly toned. Lightly soiled on bottome dge. Otherwise, fine condition.
