HENRY L. PIERCE and B. FRANK VAN CLEVE
Two pieces from the 1870s on reverse sides of an album leaf: signature of the mayor of Boston; and a hand-drawn political cartoon on the 1876 Presidential election signed by a business writer.
Two unrelated but interesting items on reverse sides of an album leaf, 6½x4: 1) Signature in ink: "Henry L Pierce/Mayor of Boston"; 2) Pencil drawing signed: "Shaking like thun.../on the Boat/Between Mount Vernon & Washington/Apr. 28th 1877/B. F. Van Cleve". The drawing shows an Irish-American and an African-American arguing about the outcome of the disputed Presidential election of 1876. The stereotypical Irishman, smoking a pipe with a bottle in his coat pocket, says, "Its Tilden, Be Gorrah!". The black man, who is either waving a hat or brandishing a knife, replies, "Hayes 's 'lected." HENRY L. PIERCE (1825-1896) served two nonconsecutive terms as Mayor of Boston (1873, 1878). In between those dates he served as a Republican Representative in the US Congress. B. FRANK VAN CLEVE was the author of practical business books, including The English and American Mechanic: a Collection of over 3,000 Receipts, Rules and Tables, designed for the use of every mechanic and manufacturer (1874), and Van Cleve's Receipts: A Plain Way to Wealth (1873). Ink notation (unknown hand), "37", on drawing side. Fine condition.
