HENRY M. BIRCH
The Reverend pens this letter regarding the logistics of returning books and viewing an
autograph collection
Autograph Letter signed: "H.M. Birch". 2p (adjoined sheet cut in half), 4½x7. Buckingham
Palace, Thursday. Photocopied versions of the letter pages have been affixed alongside original
pages (original on blue paper, and photocopied version on white paper). "My Dear Sir". In full:
"On second thought I hardly like the idea of taking your books to Osborne as there might be the
chance of their being injured in the transit to and fro and the communication is not very direct. I
will bear in mind your request and when I have an opportunity of enquiring whether it will be
profitable for you I promise what you wish I will let you know. We are so overwhelmed with
parcels and packages of all sorts when we go to Osborne that I should be afraid of losing your
valuable collection, and if we live to return to London next year I will ask you to let me come and
inspect your autographs at your own house or get you to send them here./ I remain/ obed servt./
Yours very truly". The Reverend H.M. Birch (1820-1884) served as King Edward VII's
tutor from 1848 until 1852. Cut in half along centerfold. Two horizontal mailing folds.
Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
