HENRY M. STANLEY and British musicians
He signs and dates (1886) an autograph quotation on an album leaf, which has been signed on verso by 7 musicians
Autograph Quotation signed: "Whatever the right hand findeth to do. Do it with all/thy might./Oct. 31st 1886/Henry M. Stanley", 9x10¾ album leaf. Also signed on verso: "Mary Davies (Mair Mynorydd)", "Janet Patey", "Sidney Tower", "Frederick Bevan", "Frank Barrington Foote", "J.B. Poznanski" and "Tito Mattei". Welsh-born John Rowlands was 17 when he came to the U.S. in 1858 and was adopted by a New Orleans merchant named HENRY M. STANLEY, who gave him his name. In 1865, 24-year-old Stanley became a newspaper correspondent and traveled to Asia Minor, Ethiopia, Crete and Spain. James Gordon Bennett, publisher of the "New York Herald", commissioned him to lead an expedition into central Africa to find missionary David Livingstone. In November 1871, Stanley "found" him, greeting him with the famous remark: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" From 1874 on, Stanley led various exploring expeditions into Africa. He discovered Lake Edward, circumnavigated Lake Victoria, traced the southern sources of the Nile River, surveyed Lake Tanganyika and opened up the Congo region. The Congo city of Stanleyville, now Kisangani, was named in his honor. Becoming a repatriated British citizen, he served in Parliament from 1895-1900. MARY DAVIES (1855-1930), who also went by her Welsh name, Mair Mynorydd, was a London born vocalist of Welsh lineage. She became principal soprano of the London Ballad Concerts, and later founder and first President of the Welsh Folk Song Society. JANET PATEY (1842-1894) was a contralto featured with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. She suffered a fatal heart attack after a performance on her 1894 farewell tour. SIDNEY TOWER (1850-1897) was principal tenor four the D'Oyly Carte touring companies of 1890 and 1896, performing The Mikado and Yeoman of the Guard. He also performed in London stage musicals. FREDERICK BEVAN (1856-1939) was a composer and vocal music teacher. He moved to Adelaide, Australia in 1989, from London, England. He's remembered today for his stirring bass solo "The Admiral's Broom", arranged for a male choir. There is now a music scholarship named in his honor. TITO MATTEI (1841-1914) was an Italian musician and composer. He became at an early age a professor at the Santa Cecilia academy of music at Rome, and subsequently had several successful European tours as a pianist. In 1863 he finally settled in London, where he remained for the rest of his life. He composed several hundred songs and pianoforte pieces, many of which became very popular. FRANK BARRINGTON FOOTE (1850-1911) was an English singer, often paired with opera diva Adelina Patti at Covent Garden. J. B. POZNANSKI composed and arranged sheet music for vocals and piano. Lightly soiled. Jagged at right edge. Page stamp at upper corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
