H. M. TOMLINSON
Letter declining an invitation
Autograph Letter signed: "H. M. Tomlinson", 1 page, 5½x7.
South Croydon (England), 1934 November 20. On personal letterhead
to "Dear Mr. Gardner" . In full: "Thank you for your
invitation. We should have been delighted to see you again, but unluckily that
Sunday is fixed for us already. Please give our regards to Sir Phillip & his
Lady. Yours sincerely". Henry Major Tomlinson (1873-1958) wrote novels,
short stories, travelogues, and essays. His first book, The Seas and the
Jungle (1912) described his own journey up the Amazon. A British Army war
correspondent for the first three years of World War I, he was eventually
dismissed because his writing was not sufficiently supportive of the war effort.
His anti-war feelings came through in his later works, although he supported
the resistance to the "abominable dominion" of Nazi Germany in World War II.
His novels, such as All Our Yesterdays (1930) chronicle the changes in
English society during his lifetime. One horizontal mailing fold. Otherwise,
fine condition.
