HENRY WATTERSON
Henry Watterson sends an autograph letter letting a friend now when
he is in town.
Autograph Letter signed: "Henry Watterson", 1p with blank
integral leaf, 5x8. New York, New York, 1912 December 3. To "Augustus
[last name illegible]. In full: "I shall be in town a week or ten
days. Am at the Manhattan Club. Want to see you. Your Friend." Pencil note
(unknown hand) in upper left: "Called/Dec. 8, '12". Henry Watterson (1840-1921),
a prominent US journalist, founded the Louisville Courier-Journal in
1868. A Confederate soldier in the Civil War. Elected to the US
Congress as a Democrat (1876-1877), Watterson advocated a popular march on
Washington in support of Samuel Tilden during the prolonged dispute over whether
Tilden or Rutherford had won the Presidential election of 1876. The author of
several books, including a history of the Spanish-American War, Watterson won a
Pulitzer Prize in 1918 for editorials supporting US entry into World War
I. Mailing folds. Mounting tape remnants at left edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
