HENRY MILLER
The author pens an autograph letter sending a copy of "The Smile at
the Foot of the Ladder"
Autograph Letter Signed: "Henry Miller," 1p, 8½x11. No
place, 1950 May 1. To Mr. Hellström. In full: "As you will see from
the enclosed, [not present] which I thought would please you, I am
sending you - or my publisher will! - a copy of 'The Smile at the Foot of the
Ladder'. Show it to either Bownier or Vorstedt, as you see fit - and perhaps
Victor's words about yourself & your abilities as translator. (Be discreet,
of course!) I do hope you can arrange something. The rights to the book are
mine, incidentally. All good wishes, " American author Henry Miller
(1891-1980) is best known for his controversial 1934 novel, Tropic of
Cancer, which along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicled Miller's
life as an expatriate in Paris (1930-1939). First published in France, the works
resulted in a 30-year censorship debate in the U.S., which Miller finally
won. While in Paris, Miller, the author of more than 36 works, became
involved with married author Anais Nin. Ironically, it was Nin, not
Miller who documented their romance, which inspired the 1992 film, Henry and
June (June Edith Smith Mansfield, a former taxi driver and the second of
Miller's five wives, and also had an affair with Nin). Four file holes in left
blank margin. Fold creases through "n" of Henry. Otherwise, fine
condition.
