Autograph Letter Signed: "Sincerely/Henry Miller", 1p, 8½x11. Pacific Palisades, California, 1969 June 16. On his personal letterhead to Mr. Mahoney. In full: "Since talking to you over the telephone the other day I've been having a change of heart. The idea of giving you so much time worries me. There are so many friends I have to look up, so many things of a very personal nature to do in the short days I will have (I get up late, start late) that I fear I would often be telling you nothing doing today! I mean with you. I understand quite well what your project involves and I don't blame you for wanting so much time and attention. But, as I reflect on it calmly now I see how it would hamper my movements. The alternative I could offer you is to spend 3 or 4 days with me, pumping me with questions, and then call it quits. But I doubt that "Life" will find this satisfactory. In any case, let me know before I leave next Monday. Writing me would be better than telephoning me, as I will be in and out this week - much to do." American author Henry Miller (1891-1980) is best known for his controversial 1934 novel, Tropic of Cancer, which along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicled Miller's life as an expatriate in Paris (1930-1939). First published in France, the works resulted in a 30-year censorship debate in the U.S., which Miller finally won. While in Paris, Miller, the author of more than 36 works, became involved with married author Anais Nin. Ironically, it was Nin, not Miller who documented their romance, which inspired the 1992 film, Henry and June (June Edith Smith Mansfield, a former taxi driver and the second of Miller's five wives, who also had an affair with Nin). Slightly creased, vertical fold touches the "He" of Henry. Stray ink mark at lower edge. Fine condition.
