HENRY MILLER
The author pens an autograph letter saying that he found a water color that was admired and wondering if the recipient is still interested
Autograph Letter Signed: "Sincerely/Henry Miller", 1p, 8½x11. Pacific Palisades, California, 1974 October 20. On his personal letterhead to Mr. Olson. In full: "When you visited me a few weeks ago you seemed to want very much that reproduction of a head (water color) which my daughter Val is selling, at the time I could not lay my hands on them. Now I have and I am curious to know if you would like to buy it and I am curious to know if you would like to buy it and, if so, where should we send it? I also hope that if you still like it as much when you see it again that you would tell your friends about it. (I am sending you a circular about it separately.) I suggest this not out of vanity or greed but to help my daughter. Whatever you do will be highly appreciated." American author Henry Miller (1891-1980) is best known for his controversial 1934 novel, Tropic of Cancer, which along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicled Miller's life as an expatriate in Paris (1930-1939). First published in France, the works resulted in a 30-year censorship debate in the U.S., which Miller finally won. While in Paris, Miller, the author of more than 36 works, became involved with married author Anais Nin. Ironically, it was Nin, not Miller who documented their romance, which inspired the 1992 film, Henry and June (June Edith Smith Mansfield, a former taxi driver and the second of Miller's five wives, who also had an affair with Nin). Fold creases not near signature. Fine condition.
