HENRY MILLER
The author pens an autograph letter sending books that are requested
Autograph Letter Signed: "Henry Miller", 1p, 7½x8½. Big Sur, California, 1952 October 31. On his personal pictorial letterhead to Mr. Ruffier. In full: "Just mailed you three books, as requested or rather, I took liberty of sending you 'Plexus' too, since you said you hadn't been able to get it. Price is $5.00. Think I read excerpt of your review in 'Library Journal' -? The librarian was probably a reference librarian or maybe just an 'assistant'. Then (1924 & 1925) a man about my age, slim, medium height! Used to visit me at Remsen Street, Brooklyn. I think you'll see more (91- ?) about him - and libraries - in 'Plexus". Will eventually get you for the library the other foreign titles. Have you any of the editions of the pamphlet - 'What Are You Going to Do about Alf'? Appreciate your warm words." Handwritten postscript: "P.S. Hesse's 'Voyage en Orient' is another remarkable work." Addressed by Miller on verso to: "Mr. Marius J. Ruffier/14 Gurion Street/Yonkers/New York". At the time he wrote this letter, Miller was living in Big Sur, which he helped to establish as an artist's colony during his stay there (1944-1963). He would later move to Pacific Palisades, California, where he died on June 7, 1980. Miller, who had begun writing Plexus, Book Two of The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy, in 1947, finished it in 1949; the work would not be published until 1953. In the year of this letter, Miller began work on Nexus, Book Three in the trilogy, which he would not complete 1959 (published in 1960). In 1952, Miller also divorced Janina Lepska and left for Europe on December 29 with Eve McClure, whom he would marry the following December. German-Swiss author HERMANN HESSE (1877-1962), who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946, had published En Voyage de Oriente in 1947. American author HENRY MILLER (1891-1980) is best known for his controversial 1934 novel, Tropic of Cancer, which, along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicled Miller's life as an expatriate in Paris (1930-1939). First published in France, the works resulted in a 30-year censorship debate (which Miller later finally won) in the U.S. over their sexual candor and concern for self-realization. While in Paris, Miller, the author of more than 36 works, became involved with married author Anais Nin. Ironically, it was Nin, not Miller, who documented their romance, which inspired the 1992 film, Henry and June (June Edith Smith Mansfield, a former taxi driver and the second of Miller's five wives, and also had an affair with Nin). Lightly creased and soiled. Nail head-size stain at lower blank area. Nicked at upper blank edge at mid-vertical fold, worn at corners. Soiled and stained on verso. Mid-horizontal fold "Y" and "k" in York. Otherwise, fine condition.
