HENRY MILLER
The author pens an autograph letter to a fan sending a photograph
Autograph Letter Signed: "Henry Miller/(Portuguese)", 1p, 8½x5½. Pacific Palisades, California, 1977 December 16. On his personal letterhead to Robert Laving, Hotel Rochambean, Baltimore, Minnesota. In full: "Your brother tells me I am your favorite author. He asked me to send you a photo -enclosed is the only one I can lay hands on at the moment [not present]. I wish you a good holiday period and hope you will recover full health soon. As to how I began writing - that is a book in itself. Good luck!" Fold creases through "H" of Henry. Included autograph envelope signed: "Mr. Robert Laving/Hotel Rochambean/1 West Franklin St./Baltimore, Md. (21203)" Postmarked Los Angeles, California, 1977 December 17. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition. American author Henry Miller (1891-1980) is best known for his controversial 1934 novel, Tropic of Cancer, which along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicled Miller's life as an expatriate in Paris (1930-1939). First published in France, the works resulted in a 30-year censorship debate in the U.S., which Miller finally won. While in Paris, Miller, the author of more than 36 works, became involved with married author Anais Nin. Ironically, it was Nin, not Miller who documented their romance, which inspired the 1992 film, Henry and June (June Edith Smith Mansfield, a former taxi driver and the second of Miller's five wives, who also had an affair with Nin).
