HENRY MILLER
The author pens an autograph note on a postcard, asking for a book to be picked up for him
Autograph Note Signed: "Henry Miller," 1p, 3¼x5½ postcard. Big Sur, California, 1950 September 2. 1-cent postal cars addressed by Miller to: "Mr. Lars Gustav Hellström/Östervagen 25./Solma (nr. Stockholm)/Sweden. On verso of address side in full: "Do you suppose you could pick up a book for me pub. By Boruier, called 'Sidor an America' by Hosten Jousen? There is a chapter on my work, I understand. Tell me how much to send for payment. In haste. " American author Henry Miller (1891-1980) is best known for his controversial 1934 novel, Tropic of Cancer, which along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicled Miller's life as an expatriate in Paris (1930-1939). First published in France, the works resulted in a 30-year censorship debate in the U.S., which Miller finally won. While in Paris, Miller, the author of more than 36 works, became involved with married author Anais Nin. Ironically, it was Nin, not Miller who documented their romance, which inspired the 1992 film, Henry and June (June Edith Smith Mansfield, a former taxi driver and the second of Miller's five wives, and also had an affair with Nin). Four file holes in right margin touching two word of note and second "l" of Miller. Otherwise, fine condition.
