HENRY MORGENTHAU, JR. and ELINOR MORGENTHAU. Ephemera signed:
"Elinor F. Morgenthau", "Henry Morgenthau Jr", 4-inch diameter circle of
pink fabric. HENRY MORGENTHAU, JR.. (1891-1967) held several posts under
his life-long friend, Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Governor of New York
(1929-1933). When FDR became President, he appointed Morgenthau Assistant
Secretary, and then Secretary (1934-1945) of the Treasury. Morgenthau
continued in the office until President Truman could name a successor. To
finance the New Deal and World War II, Morgenthau raised more money through
loans and taxes than all of the 51 previous Treasury Secretaries combined.
Among his achievements were defending the dollar against Nazi Germany's
efforts to destabilize it and facilitating loans for military purchases by US
allies. In 1944, he proposed the Morgenthau Plan to strip postwar
Germany of industry and reduce it to an agricultural nation. He was Chairman of
the United Jewish Appeal from 1947 to 1950. Morgenthau was married to the former
ELINOR FATMAN from 1916 until her death in 1949. They had three children.
Morgenthau later remarried. Loose threads from hemming on verso show at edges.
Otherwise, fine condition.
