HENRY NOBLE MacCRACKEN
The innovative President of Vassar College confirms a luncheon speaker.
Typed Letter signed: "Henry Noble MacCracken", 1 page, 8½x5½. President's Office, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, New York 1928 May 15. To Mrs. J. M. Wainwright, Scranton, Pennsylvania. In full: "We are very glad that you will be able to speak at the Trustee's luncheon, and believe that the subject you have chosen is a good one. With cordial regards, I am Sincerely yours". Henry Noble MacCracken (1870-1970) taught English at Yale University and Smith College before beginning three decades as President of Vassar (1915-1946). Popular with students, who called him "Prexy," MacCracken was an education innovator, promoting field work and community research, and offering students more choices in program design and course selection. He promoted cooperation among a group of elite women's college , "the Seven Sisters." He played an active role in the founding of Sarah Lawrence College. Mrs. JM Wainwright most probably refers to the wife of General John Mayhew Wainwright (1883-1953), a veteran of both World Wars who earned a Medal of Honor as commander of the Allied Forces in the Philippines at the time of their surrender to the Empire of Japan. Two vertical folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
