The English theologian signed and sent this handwritten letter to colleague Reverend Edward Parry
Autograph Letter Signed: “H.P. Liddon” on an 8½x7 sheet of paper (full size). The single sheet is folded in half to form four pages of text. Dated February 25, 1857. The prominent theologian sent this letter to Reverend Edward Parry, at this time a chaplain to the Bishop of London. The Reverend was named Bishop of Dover 13 years after he received this letter. Message in Part (pages 1 and 4): “Having read your memoir of Sir Edward Parry I cannot help sitting down to thank you at once for a book which has yielded me very sincere pleasure, + I trust something better + more lasting. Though I never had the privilege of seeing your Father…he was a service to you, in the way of affording materials: but he had destroyed his manuscripts some years ago, as having been too seriously injured by persons to whom he had lent them to be of any value as he though; and he said that his memory was too untrustworthy to fall back upon. Again thanking you my dear Parry, for your record of a life which I must always love + respect, and begging you to remember me very kindly to the Rector of Powys”. Liddon congratulates Parry on the completion of a memoir about Parry's father, Rear Admiral Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855), who led one of the first expeditions to the North Pole. Henry P. Liddon (1829-1890) was a theologian who became famous for his preaching abilities throughout the nation. His publications include a biography of theologian Edward Bouverie Pusey, a few sermon compilations, and other religious works that study the Holy Scripture.Rather than accept one of the numerous bishopric positions he was offered, Liddon preferred to travel and preach along the way; after he resigned from his position as a professor of the Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford in 1870, he travelled into Northern Africa and Eastern Europe. He passed away at the height of his popularity in 1890. Tape stains along spine of fold. Mailing creases. Significantly toned. Minor tears.
