HENRY TAYLOR
The poet and English playwright signs his name in black ink
Signature: "Henry Taylor", in black ink, 5x4¼. Printed caption on separate slip affixed below signature. Henry Taylor (1800-1886) was an English playwright, poet and civil servant. A long-term employee of the Colonial Office (1824-1872), he authored several critically praised plays in the late 1820s and 1830s. His controversial 1836 essay, "The Statesman," satirized bureaucracy. He published a volume of lyric poems in 1845, and an autobiography in 1885. Irregularly trimmed. Paper and adhesive residue (previous mounting) on verso with show-through at left. Toned, soiled and creased.
