The literary critic and author signs this handwritten letter in which
he explains that he can't visit the recipient
Autograph letter signed: "H.T.T." in black ink. 5x7¾. No date,
Tuesday. To: "Dear Mrs. Embury," in full: "A thousand thanks
for your kind note & beautiful poem. I had such a headache on Christmas day,
that I feared you would find me quite stupid. I did not consider how much a fine
imagination & kindness of heart will do toward veiling the defenciences
[sic] of a dull companion. I find it impossible to visit you this week as
I had proposed & cannot in conscience say a word to withdraw our friend Milt
from home, as he has scarcely began his lecture. Ever truly. Henry
Theodore Tuckerman (1813-1871) was an American writer, essayist and critic.
He wrote extensively both in prose and verse. He travelled much in Italy, which
influenced his choice of subjects in his earlier writings. These include
The Italian Sketch-book (1835); Isabel, or Sicily: A Pilgrimage
(1839); two volumes of verse, Poems (1851) and A Sheaf of
Verse (1864), among many others. He was prominent in the literary life
of New York City after 1845.
Tuckerman also wrote articles for The Knickerbocker magazine
including "Love in a Lazzaret" (1838), a vignette from his travels in Italy,
"New York Artists" (1856), and "Paris and Life There" (1861). Toned. Corners
rounded. Lightly creased throughout. Normal mailing folds. Left edge slightly
frayed. Faded pencil note at bottom underneath signature. Otherwise, fine
